I was reading the book “Powerful” by Patty McCord when this question finally clicked with me.
How will this help the customer?
It’s so simple, yet so powerful. It works for every piece of work that may fall on your backlog. As a team, you should look at every item and ask this question.
Solving this Bug. How will this help the customer?
It is a P# that prevents the user from entering our website. This will help the customer have access to our content.
Technical improvement. How will this help the customer?
We currently take ## minutes/hours/day to repair a bug. Improving this in our stack will reduce the time by ##%. This allows us to respond faster to our customers.
New feature. How will this help the customer?
Our customer needs to do this, that and this more whenever he wants to access this content. When we add this new feature, the number of steps will be reduced to a click of a button.
Next time a task falls on your plate, put yourself in your customer’s shoes, and ask:
How will this help me?
Answer that question honestly, and you will see, the work will make much more sense afterward.
